St Brigid
T
he first day of February heralds the feast of St Brigid, La Fheile Bride. This is regarded as the first day of spring.
Saint Brigid, 'the Mary of the Gael', as she has been known to generations of Irish people, commands affection and respect.
She is remembered for her hospitality and hard work, as a woman of God and a woman of the people. A powerful personality, who appealed to all, from those on high to the humble beggar.
She was born in Faughart, Co Louth; Brigid's youth was not a happy one. Legend has it that the St Brigid's cross was first made by Brigid as she sat by the bedside of a dying chieftain.
She explains what it means to be a Christian, as she weaves the cross from rushes which c
over the floor.
She showed care, especially for those who were weak and vulnerable. St Brigid was a friend of St Patrick.
