Students follow the Key Stage 3 Programme of Study experiencing mathematics in the contexts of Processes, Number, Algebra, Shape and Space and Data Handling. Throughout the Key Stage students are assessed and given opportunities to demonstrate their abilities in each of these areas. Students through interactive approaches have opportunities to work through mathematical problems in a range of contexts. Paired and group work is integral to the learning experience building on pupil strengths of what they already know. Students also develop thinking skills as well as how to apply mathematical concepts to everyday problems. Financial Capability is also a vital part of the Key Stage 3 curriculum. At the end of their third year students sit their CCEA KS3 exams with a majority of students attaining levels 5 and 6.
At Key stage 3 our aims are:
To develop interest and enjoyment in the subject and reach the highest possible standards.
To encourage pupils to face mathematical problems with confidence and to foster conceptual awareness.
To develop pupils’ numeracy skills that will help them with their adult life.
To support the whole school aim encouraging the very best intellectual development for all pupils appropriate to their ability and to work progressively towards examination success.
