Parents, pupils and staff of St. Brigid’s High School recently enjoyed a Christmas cooking and drinks demonstration in the newly fitted Home Economics department. The event saw boys and their families learning about food and drinks with a seasonal theme.

Organised by Ms Mary Kelly, Acting Vice Principal, as part of the St Brigid’s extended schools program, the school welcomed local cook, Mrs Ita Deveny. Mrs Deveny made a range of items including festive favourites such as mince pies and chestnut stuffing as well as innovative fruit tortillas, turkey supreme and tomato and roast pepper soup. Ita shared lots of helpful hints and was able to enlighten some of the students in attendance who are currently following catering as part of their Vocational Education Programme at the Southern Regional College

To compliment the lovely food Mr Martin Kelly, a well known local barman made a selection of ‘mocktails’ for everyone to enjoy. Martin shared his knowledge on the importance of flavour blending and the presentation of drinks whilst showing us how a ‘mocktail’ should be shaken!
Both visitors entertained the audience and produced delicious samples which the pupils and families appreciated a great deal.

Ms Kelly thanked both experts and the audience for their attendance: ‘We are delighted to have welcomed parents and pupils along with our visitors to St. Brigid’s today. The newly fitted Home Economics department is a very welcome addition to the extensive facilities we have here at St. Brigid’s. Pupils will certainly enjoy using the new facilities as they learn the importance of good food and a healthy diet.
