Prison Me No Way Seminar
Year 11 students at St Brigid’s High School recently took part in a seminar entitled “Prison Me – No Way” delivered by officers of the Northern Ireland Prison Service as part of the Key Stage 4 Personal Development programme.
Prison Me – No Way is an innovative programme for young people, which aims to present the realities of prison life and dispel some of the common myths and misconceptions about imprisonment. The programme aims to raise awareness of the ultimate consequences of crime and to discourage young people from making a mistake that could ruin their adult lives. It examines how drugs, bullying, etc can lead young people into a life of crime and it aims to promote a better understanding of life in prison.
PMNW volunteers are serving prison officers who work with schools and youth groups throughout Northern Ireland. They present a no-holds-barred view of conditions in prison. The initiative is interactive and the students were involved in a lively, sometimes amusing, but ultimately thought-provoking discussion around the issues involved in being in prison. By showing their audience the realities of prison life, the impact on their families and their future adult life, the officers hope to dissuade young people from becoming involved in crime.
The students found this to be an interesting and educational experience. Feedback was very positive and it was obvious the students benefited from the session. Mr Doyle thanked Colm for his valuable contribution to the Key Stage 4 Personal Development programme.
