Special Educational Needs

The SEN Dpartment is led by Ms L McGuigan (SENCo) and supported by eight classroom assistants.

SENTo ensure full entitlement and access for SEN students to high quality education within a board, balanced and relevant curriculum so that they can reach their full potential and enhance their self esteem.

It is our policy to develop teaching and learning strategies appropriate to the circumstances, abilities and background of the students.  It is important that the teaching and learning methods used to contribute to the development of identified skills, knowledge and concepts and that assessment practices are supportive of the learning process.  In addition to using a range of teaching methods, it is our policy to have a flexible approach to the processes of learning.  Grouping students (in English and Mathematics) according to their levels of ability within bands provide students with the opportunity to work at their own pace and is a first step towards differentiation.

When teaching students with Special Educational Needs it is our policy to use teaching and learning strategies and materials which are varied and appropriate to the nature and level of the need.  Materials are chosen carefully to ensure that the level of language used is readily understood by students with reading difficulties.  Instructions are clear and concise.  Thought is given to the design and format of materials.  Where it is appropriate, use is made of multi-sensory learning resources, auto-visual equipment and IT.

If the teacher feels that further intervention is required, based on assessment and monitoring of progress, evidence should be presented to the SENCo and a request made for additional provision.
