Newcomer Pupils
Bonjour… Buenos Dias…. Dia Dhuit…. Guten Tag… Bongiorno…. Dzień dobry… Labas… Sveika… Hi ye daen….
Newcomer is used to refer to those parents and children whose mother tongue is not English. Saint Brigid’s have currently 23 Newcomer pupils on their register. The many children who attend St Brigid’s reflect a variety of European cultures, providing the school with an opportunity to celebrate linguistic and cultural diversity. Students hail from as far afield as Poland, Lithuania, Hungary, Russia and Latvia.
Newcomer children are very well catered for in Saint Brigid’s as recently highlighted in an Inspectorate Report – “The school provides effective support for newcomer pupils with a very good induction programme and withdrawal support and a school ‘buddy’ system which welcomes and includes the newcomers”
Newcomer pupils are provided with a Saint Brigid’s Welcoming Booklet in their native language to help them settle into their new school. They are provided with a visual timetable (if needed) and are appointed two ‘buddies’ from their class to help answer any questions they may have. They are tested in the first week of their new school to ascertain what level of English they have. Their level of English will determine how many extra English classes they are provided with to ensure they integrate fully into mainstream teaching. Mr Niall McParland (Newcomer Co-ordinator) and Mrs Susan Turner (Newcomer Support Assistant) are happy to answer any queries you may have.
